Five killed in Lahore bakery fire

LAHORE: At least five people were killed when a bakery located in Barkat market area, Garden Town, caught fire here on Tuesday.

Police said the fire broke out on the ground floor of Garden Heights, a multi-storey plaza near Punjab University, and spread to offices and apartments located on the top floors of the building.

On getting information, more than two dozen firefighting vehicles reached the spot and started rescue operation.

The emergency services used a snorkel to rescue 10 people.

The rescue officials said that five people got choked to death due to smoke inhalation, adding that the bodies and injured were shifted to Jinnah Hospital. The fire fighter succeeded in controlling the blaze after hectic efforts of many hours.

The deceased were identified as Shahbaz aged (25),Shahid (40), Talib (30), Shakeel (15).

The cause behind the fire could not be ascertained but rescue services suspected short circuit.

Mayor Lahore, Col (retd) Mubashir Javed visited the site of the incident and monitored relief operation.
