BERLIN: It was not only the current German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her adviser which were spied upn by the The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) but also the her predecessors, WikiLeaks said on Wednesday.

The independent group founded by WikiLeaks published what it said were three NSA intercepts of Merkel’s conversations along with listed telephone numbers for the chancellor, her aides, her office and even her fax machine.

The secrecy-spilling site’s latest report is likely to rekindle concerns in Germany that the NSA was engaged in widespread surveillance of its close ally. Last week, WikiLeaks published documents that appeared to show the NSA had eavesdropped on the French government, prompting anger in Paris.

WikiLeaks said the NSA targeted for long-term surveillance 125 phone numbers of top German officials.
