At least 13 people have died and over 50 injured after a van struck a group of pedestrians in the Las Ramblas area of Barcelona city center. Police have confirmed that they are treating the incident as a terrorist attack.
The Catalan president has confirmed that two people have been arrested following the incident. Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of suspects but Spanish media is reporting that of the suspected attackers has been killed following a shootout with police.
Spanish police have confirmed earlier media reports that a vehicle drove through a police checkpoint on Barcelona’s Avinguda Diagonal. Two officers were injured in the incident which took place shortly before 7:30pm local time.
It has not been confirmed that the incident is linked to the van attack in the city center.
