ISLAMABAD: The puppet authorities of Indian Held Kashmir (IHK) on Saturday imposed curfew-like restrictions in downtown Srinagar to prevent people from conducting different programmes in connection with the ongoing Martyrdom Week.

The Martyrdom Week, which commenced on May 16 and will continue till May 21, is being observed in the memory of prominent martyred Hurriyet leaders, Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone and the martyrs of Hawal, KMS reported.

Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq was shot dead by unidentified gunmen after barging into his residence in Srinagar on 21st May in 1990. On the same day, seventy mourners were killed when Indian troops opened indiscriminate fire on his funeral procession in Hawal area of Srinagar.

On the same day in 2002, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone was martyred by unknown attackers, when he was returning from addressing a gathering at Mazar-e-Shuhada in Srinagar.

The restrictions have also affected attendance in educational institutions, banks and government offices in the city.

The forum led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has announced to hold a workers’ rally at Rajouri Kadal in Srinagar, Saturday as part of the Martyrdom Week programmes. It has also called for complete shutdown in occupied Kashmir and a march towards Martyrs’ Graveyard at Eidgah in Srinagar, tomorrow, to pay tributes to Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone and martyrs of Hawal.
