Islamabad High Court to hear Tayyaba torture case

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday decided to continue hearing 10-year old Tayyaba torture case and dismissed civil society’s plea seeking transfer of case at native province’s local court.

During the hearing, IHC Justice Amir Farooq remarked that the issue pertaining to torture of a 10-year-old maid by owners additional judge Raja Khurram and his wife Maheen would not be transferred to subordinate court as IHC is authorized to hear it as per law.

Civil society requested in the petition that the case should be forwarded to the court of another province as additional session judge was involved in it.

The high court dismissed a petition by known lawyer Asma Jehangir on behalf of the civil society calling for the transfer of the case to the high court, saying that they were not party to the case and decided to hear the case by itself.

In March the Supreme Court ordered the trial court to stop hearing the case as the magistrate could be a colleague of the main accused in the case, Raja Khurram, a judge in the additional sessions court.

Till a verdict in the case comes out Tayyaba is in custody of an orphanage.
