MQM says Zakat, Fitra collection not a crime

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) strongly reacted over the arrest of party’s 16 workers by Rangers and maintained that that the collection of Zakat and Fitra for a welfare organization is not a crime.

Addressing a press conference at party headquarters, Rabita Committee chairman Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui questioned that since when the collection of Zakat and Fitra for a welfare organization became illegal.

Siddiqui claimed that people of Karachi know very well that MQM’s welfare wing Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation (KKF) is working for their welfare on a large scale and for the purpose, a meeting was underway in party’s Gulbahar sector when Rangers raided the place and nabbed the sector incharge and 15 other workers.

He maintained that the law enforcement agency is terming the act of Zakat/Fitra collection as ‘extortion’ to justify their raid.
Rabita Committee termed the arrest of party workers an act to hinder the welfare activities.

Earlier, Rangers personnel arrested sixteen MQM workers within the precincts of Rizvia police station claiming that they were extorting money from people in the name of Zakat and Fitra collection.
