ATHENS: Greek banks will remained closed for a week in connection with country’s debt crisis. The government on Sunday decided to shut banks and restrict cash withdrawals after the European Central Bank decided not to extend emergency funding.
Greek banks will not open until July 7 in an attempt to avoid financial panic, after ECB capped the emergency funds keeping them running.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras urged citizens to remain peaceful and insisted that bank deposits were safe. He blamed European partners and the European Central Bank for forcing Greece’s hand.
