61 per cent drinking water unsafe in country, Senate told

ISLAMABAD: Sixty-one per cent drinking water is unsafe in the country.

This was told to the Senate by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

It said that samples of drinking water were taken from 29 cities in 2020. It was found after testing that 61 drinking water was unsafe.

It was revealed in the written response of the ministry that 100 per cent of the water samples taken from Nawabshah, Gilgit Baltistan and Mirpurkhas were found unsafe for drinking. It further said that 93 per cent of the water samples in Karachi were unsafe, while 67 percent taken from Sukkur were found not fit for drinking purpose. Eighty per cent water samples of Hyderabad and 92 of Badin were also found unsafe.

The report said that 29 per cent of drinking water samples were unsafe in Islamabad, while 75 per cent in Bahawalpur, 94 in Multan, 83 in Sargodha, 31 in Lahore, 10 in Kasur, 70 in Muzaffarabad and 65 percent in Quetta.

According to the report, 100 per cent water samples obtained from Gujrat and Sialkot were found safe for drinking purpose.
