The Los Angeles mayor has described wildfires as the worst disaster in US history as death toll jumped to 24 from the devastating fires.
Locals are getting ready for the potential return of strong winds, which threaten to push the fires toward some of the city’s most famous landmarks.
The massive fires have set more than 40,000 acres to ablaze , including over 23,000 acres across the Pacific Palisades and along the Pacific Coast Highway.
Authorities said that only 11 per cent of the Palisades fire was contained as of last night. On the other hand, the Eaton fire, contain so far only 27 per cent, has reduced more than 14,000 acres to ashes in Pasadena and Altadena.
Fierce Santa Ana winds are likely to return this week as the National Weather Service anticipates gusts of 30 to 50 mph in coastal areas and up to 70 mph in the Los Angeles and Ventura counties’ mountains.
The fires are on track to be among the costliest ever seen in the US having losses expected to exceed $135 billion.
Meanwhile, Landlords have been accused of “taking advantage” of victims who have lost their homes in the city’s wildfires. They are illegally gouge prices for those desperate for a place to stay in Los Angeles.
