The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) has banned the sale, supply and use of iron deficiency tablets manufactured by a renowned pharma firm.

According to details, substandard folic acid tablets of a well-known brand were seized from Balochistan, after which Drap declared two batches of iron deficiency treatment medicine to be substandard.

The authority has issued a product recall alert for substandard folic acid tablets, stating that Drug Testing Lab Quetta has declared the batches of the drug substandard and has banned the market supply of the affected batches of the tablets.

The alert states that the sale, use of folic acid tablets batch 490, 612 has been banned. The affected folic acid tablets are manufactured by Zafa Pharma Karachi, the Drap alert said.

It further said that the tablet sample did not meet the quality test criteria, and the same in the laboratory test weighed less than the prescribed weight.

The alert states that the medicine prepared with less than prescribed salt may be ineffective and the safety of non-standard medicine is unclear. Its use may be harmful to health.

Drap directed Zafa Pharma to stop supply of affected batches of tablets, and asked the company to recall affected batches of tablets from the market.
