The United States has slapped sanctions on companies in Iran and Russia and accused them of trying to interfere in the American election this year.
In a statement, the US Treasury Department said the entities aimed to stoke socio-political tensions and influence the US electorate during the 2024 US election.
The Treasury said that the CGE also tempered a video to produce baseless accusations concerning a 2024 vice presidential candidate. However, it did not specify which candidate was targeted.
In November last year, Republican Donald Trump was elected president, beating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. He made a remarkable comeback four years after he was voted out of the White House.
Treasury’s Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Bradley Smith said, in the statement, that the governments of Iran and Russia have targeted our election processes and institutions and sought to divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns.
He further said that the United States will remain vigilant against adversaries who would undermine our democracy.
