Dozens of Pakistanis aboard ill-fated capsized boat still missing: Ambassador

Pakistani ambassador to Greece has confirmed that dozens of Pakistanis aboard the ill-fated capsized boat are still missing.

Addressing a press conference, Ambassador Aamir Aftab said that the bodies of the Greek boat tragedy will be dispatched to the homeland and all the expenses will be borne by the Pakistan Embassy.

“Dozens of Pakistanis are still missing while the rescue operation is going on. However, chances of survival of those missing are low,” he told newsmen.

Aamir Aftab said that the Pakistanis were onboard five boats travelling illegally from Libya. The boats met accident due to overloading. The boat in which Pakistanis were onboard had developed a crack and later capsized. A total of 80 Pakistanis were onboard the ill-fated boat.

He said that a large number of young children are among those missing.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Office has confirmed death of four Pakistanis in the Greek boat tragedy.

A spokesperson for the FO said that the four victims have been identified. She said that the Foreign Office is in contact with Greek authorities for the return of bodies and rescued Pakistanis to the homeland.
