Pakistan conducts mock tsunami exercise

Pakistan Meteorological Department, Karachi, has conducted a mock drill for a 9.2 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Indonesia’s Sumatra.

The Meteorological Department conducted the mock exercise at the Karachi Seismic Center. During the mock exercise information was exchanged with other countries through mutual communication after the mock earthquake.

According to Director Seismic Center Karachi Amir Haider Leghari, this activity was carried out for the second time this year.

Tsunami bulletins were issued during the exercise as per the SOP laid down by the Tsunami Warning Center Karachi.

Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz said that Pakistan is a member country of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System and a designated national authority as the National Tsunami Warning Center.

He further said that the main objective of the testing drill exercise is to inform the coastal community and prepare them for any potential tsunami threat.
