Indian police fire tear gas shells at protesting farmers in Punjab

Indian farmers have resumed their march to New Delhi from the Shambhu protest site on the Punjab-Haryana border today and demanded a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

However, the farmers  march was stopped by the Haryana Police just a few meters into their journey. leading to clashes. The police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesting farmers.

Haryana Police demanded the farmers to show the necessary permission to proceed with their protest, which resulted into an argument with the farmers and protesters at Shambhu.

Farmers said that the police are asking for identity cards, but they should give a guarantee that they will allow us to go to Delhi.

“Police say there is no permission to go to New Delhi. Then why should we give identity cards? he questioned.

They said that they will give them identity cards if they allow us to go to New Delhi.

Meanwhile, the Haryana Police claimed that the farmers were moving as a mob and not as the planned group of 101 farmers.

The farmers would be allowed to move ahead only after identity verification, the police said and added: “We will first verify identities of the farmers and then allow them to go to New Delhi. We have a list of 101 farmers, but these are not the same people–they are not letting us verify their identities and are moving ahead as a mob.”
