Govt decides to give special powers to security forces to arrest any person on suspicion

In an unusual development to deal with the security threats, the federal government has decided to empower the security forces to arrest any person on suspicion.

In this connection, a bill to amend the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 has been submitted to the National Assembly.

According to bill, the armed forces will have the special powers to take into custody a person on suspicion.

The suspect may be taken into custody for three months on solid reasons and information. A high-level joint investigation team (JIT) comprising Superintendent of Police, intelligence officials and representatives of civil armed forces will be formed to investigate the arrested person.

The bill after approval from the National Assembly will be applicable for a period of two years.
