Karachi without water for past several days

Several parts of the country’s commercial capital are without water for the last few days forcing people to purchase the natural resource at exorbitant prices to meet their needs amid hot weather.

The Karachi Water Corporation had announced to suspend water supply for four days last week due to some technical reasons, but despite the passage of several days, the supply has not been restored in various areas including Old City Areas, Lyari, Kharadar, Landhi, North Nazimabad and New Karachi.

Due to non-availability of water, household routines are badly affected and people are forced to buy water for domestic use through tankers.

According to the authorities concerned, the daily requirement of water in the city is 120 crore gallons while the water pumped from Dhabeji and Hub Canal is 60 crore gallons. After line losses and theft, less than half of the required water is left for the city.  Another reason for scarcity is the inequitable distribution of water.

Water Corporation Chairman and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has launched a mega project to bring 10 million gallons of water from Hub Canal to Karachi, which will be completed in 2025 at a cost of Rs16 billion.

It is being said that this project will improve water supply in Kemari, Western and Central districts of the metropolis.
