Nokia launches classic flip design Barbie phone

HMD Global, the company behind Nokia-branded phones, has launched a unique Barbie-branded phone that combines a classic “flip” design with a digital detox approach.

Priced at $130, this hot pink device is targeted towards consumers seeking a simpler mobile experience without internet connectivity.

The phone features a 0.3-megapixel camera, flash torch, and interchangeable back covers, along with Barbie-themed stickers and a pastel beaded phone strap.

This collaboration between HMD Global and Mattel, the toymaking giant behind Barbie, aims to capitalizse on the growing trend of embracing “dumb phones.”

Research firm CCS Insight forecasts promising sales, estimating 400,000 units will be sold in the U.K. this year. The Barbie phone’s lack of internet connectivity aligns with the growing trend of digital detox among consumers, particularly Gen Z, who seek to limit the harmful effects of social media.

HMD Global has held the rights to sell Nokia-branded mobile products since 2016 and rebranded as Human Mobile Devices earlier this year.

Nokia earns royalty payments on sales of devices with its brand by HMD Global.

This new Barbie phone offers an alternative to internet-connected smartphones, catering to consumers seeking a less distracting mobile experience.
