Type C chargers now mandatory for all smartphones

Type C chargers have been made mandatory for all smartphones in India by June next year.

Indian media reports said the government first hinted in December 2022 that a single Type C charger would be mandatory for all phones. In this regard, the then government had also issued a letter to all the mobile companies.

The government has decided that all mobile companies will offer all their phones for sale in India with Type-C chargers by June 2025. Similarly, the Indian government has also made Type-C chargers mandatory for all laptops. In this regard, the government has given time till June 2026 to the companies.

According to the report, the Indian government will make a single Type C charger mandatory for other electronic devices, including headphones and other devices, in the third phase – likely to start after 2026.

It should be noted that before India, the European Union had mandated a single Type C charger for all phones and laptops, and all companies are now required to ship phones and laptops with Type C chargers in all 27 member countries by December 2024.
