Palestinian Envoy to UN Riyad Mansour has said that it is “very regrettable” that the US used its veto power to kill yet another UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
He said that call it whatever, humanitarian, describe it as you wish, but immediate ceasefire, as requested by the secretary-general of the UN, and almost all humanitarian agencies of the United Nations, and a massive number of countries in the General Assembly.
Mansour said it is the wrong message to be sending by the Security Council to Israel. Palestine will not give up its efforts to find sympathy at the UN, he added.
The Palestinian envoy said that we will continue knocking on the door of the Security Council, the General Assembly, all components of the United Nations.
To a question about US envoy Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s justification for the veto, that a ceasefire would harm now-stalled negotiations for a truce deal, the Palestinian envoy was dismissive.
He said that is not true, because two of those who are involved in these sensitive talks the representatives of Qatar and Egypt indicated that that is not so.
He continued that a ceasefire will help the negotiation to move forward swiftly, and to accomplish the objective of the exchange of prisoners, and hostages.
